Woodland Inn, 63992 State Road 331, South Bend
If you are looking for what is possibly the best burger in Michiana, then look no further than the Woodland Inn on Bremen Highway (SR 331) in South Bend!!! The burgers here are AMAZING!!! And I am not even close to exaggerating on that! They have several different sizes, from a 1/4 all the way up to the South Side Slammer which is comprised of 6-1/2 pound burgers on 3 buns with 6 slices of cheese and 3 toppings. The cost of the “Slammer” is $20 which comes with a challenge. If you can eat it within 30 minutes with no help from friends and have your plate clean, then you get your photo up on the wall of fame along with a free t-shirt a $5 coupon and a lot of respect. Below is a picture of one of these “beasts” of a burger. Needless to say, there are only a few pictures up on the wall…….and mine is NOT one of them.
The other REALLY REALLY cool thing about the Woodland Inn, is that it is Haunted……that was NOT a typo! It is actually Haunted! Through the years there have literally been hundreds of accounts of encounters with ghosts or spirits or whatever you want to call them. In fact today, when we went, our server said that she actually saw one of them for the first time, though others at the restaurant had had the same type of encounter. Before entering the restaurant, I recommend downloading a Ghost Radar App for your Android or iPhone. Then turn it lose while you are dining. While I was looking over the menu today, my app picked up the word Eat. Later as I was getting ready to leave I was taking a couple of photo’s and the app picked up the word Beautiful and then it picked up the word Stop…..so I stopped taking pictures at that point……..that was spooky!
Every once in awhile, the allow “ghost hunters” to come in at night to explore and experience whatever they can experience. I am told that on the last ghost hunt in November, a person went into the basement, only to be told by a ghost that they were not wanted in the basement that day. There have also been instances where chairs were moved or tipped over for no reason. Just ask any of the staff, they have all kinds of stories to tell. From how prior owners at one time haunted the restaurant to how back in the olden days there used to be a blacksmith business next to the restaurant where a man once died and then haunted the building. The stories go on and on!!
Whether you believe in the Haunting sort of thing or not, it makes for a VERY entertaining evening with GREAT tasting food!
The Woodland Inn is open Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, Friday and Saturday from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm and on Sunday from 7:00 am to 11:30 am. Be sure to check out their Facebook page as well.
